San Mateo County Library | Family Literacy Events
San Mateo County Library held two National Family Literacy Month events to highlight the commitment East Palo Alto families has toward educating their community about healthy habits and the importance of literacy and access to books.
One participant said, “We learn so much at Toyota Family Learning that benefits our own family, we need to bring this to the community, because we are part of the community and they need to know how to better help their children grow.”
They also took this time to bring attention to the fundraising efforts of local schools to refurbish their libraries.
The Raising a Superstar fundraiser activities included the families teaching yoga, facilitating Wonderopolis explorations, conducting a read-aloud on sportsmanship, providing samples of nutritious Latino dishes, selling a recipe book they created adapting traditional recipes into more healthful versions, and experimenting with different ways of flavoring water without sugar.
Fundraiser attendees purchased tickets to participate in the various learning activities and also donated funds by spinning a bilingual literacy facts carnival wheel. All proceeds went to increasing the library collection of a neighborhood elementary school library.
Each November – National Family Literacy Month – we lift up and celebrate the tireless efforts of family literacy and family-focused programs, and this year we’re shining a spotlight on 10 of NCFL’s partner organizations as they host family learning events in communities across the U.S.
