Service-learning strategies have been widely used to enhance learning experiences of youth and young adults. Participation in these strategies often results in increased school engagement and attendance, civic participation, and leadership activities. Although service-learning undertakings have typically been carried out with school-age and college students, NCFL has developed a model that extends service-learning benefits to families. “Going Deeper with Family Service Learning”  is a one-hour webinar that will focus on facilitation techniques to engage families in Family Service Learning to maximize the family voice and outcomes. Strategies from the field will be shared by guest presenters Robb Gallegos (Metropolitan State University—Denver, Colorado), Cynthia Mora (Public Education Foundation, Las Vegas, Nevada), and Christina Mireles (Southwest Solutions, Detroit, Michigan). Supporting Family Literacy with SNAP E&T Program Funds | Friday, February 23 at 2pm EST

What is SNAP E&T and how can it support family literacy efforts? The SNAP Employment and Training (SNAP E&T) program is a federally-funded program that states can use to enhance non-federal investments in skills training and education for low-income adults who receive SNAP (formerly, the Food Stamp program). In this free webinar, NCFL is joined by Marcie Foster from the Office of Employment and Training, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) of USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service. Tune in to learn how family literacy programs can tap into funds from SNAP E&T. This flexible program can be used by states to fund both training and supportive services and is optimally used when aligned with other federal and non-federal workforce development and career pathways efforts. On this webinar, USDA will share information about the program so family literacy programs can better understand the opportunity that SNAP E&T may present to states with whom they are working. In addition, USDA will share updates on two technical assistance projects—the SNAP to Skills Project and the SNAP E&T Academy—that both seek to expand national expertise on the program. WIOA Career Pathways Innovations – Connecting Adult Education to Workforce Development | Friday, March 2 at 2pm EST

Join the Literacy Funders Network and NCFL to learn how the Chicago Citywide Literacy Coalition (CCLC) is working with local partners to use data to create innovative ways to help adults with low-skills move onto a career pathway. Based on research and data compilation conducted by CCLC, it became clear that many adult education participants enroll in services seeking entry into employment that pays family-sustaining wages. The passage of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) and its emphasis on career pathways provided the impetus to take data into action and build intentional programming that connects adult education providers to the workforce development system. Join our webinar to learn about innovative solutions that build direct connections between adult education providers and their local American Job Center and take data and policy into action. Presenters include Becky Raymond (Chicago Citywide Literacy Coalition); Andi Drileck (National Able Network®); and Norman Ruano, Ph.D. (St. Augustine College). Register now>>
