Unleasing the Power of Family Voice: Integrating parent perspectives into early childhood policy and practice

Families are essential partners in building equitable and effective early childhood systems. When family voice is authentically integrated into policy development, decisions are more responsive, sustainable, and grounded in lived experience. Yet in many states, particularly in the field of early childhood, family leadership remains inconsistently supported and rarely
embedded in policy structures.

Developed by the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) in partnership with the Southern Education Foundation (SEF), this toolkit elevates lessons from the Southern Early Childhood Education Justice (SECEJ) Network to strengthen how family voice and leadership inform early childhood policy and systems change. It highlights effective practices that elevate family voice and leadership in policy development, showcasing what is working across Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, and West Virginia, and why those efforts matter. While this work is rooted in the experiences of families, advocates, and organizations across the South, the toolkit serves as a national resource for those seeking to strengthen family voice and leadership in their communities and systems
