Celebrate National Family Literacy Month® with NCFL this November!

The National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) invites you to join us in celebrating National Family Literacy Month® this November.

Families are at the heart of every child’s education. When parents and caregivers take an active role in learning, children are more likely to succeed in school and beyond. Research shows that a parent’s educational achievement is closely tied to their child’s success, which is why learning works best when it reaches the whole family.

A day that grew into a month

NCFL established November 1 as National Family Literacy Day® more than 30 years ago, in collaboration with Congress. That single day has grown into a month-long observance involving schools, libraries, and family literacy programs across the country.

Ways to celebrate

  • Learn about family literacy. Explore how family literacy strengthens families and communities.
  • Find a program near you. Search the National Literacy Directory for family literacy programs in your area.
  • Request a proclamation. Ask your local government to recognize November as National Family Literacy Month.
  • Build learning into everyday routines. Turn mealtimes, car rides, and errands into chances to read, talk, and learn together.
  • Explore NCFL’s online resource library. Find activities and tools for families and educators.
  • Spread the word. Use NCFL’s promotional graphics and resources, and share your celebration with #NationalFamilyLiteracyMonth.
