Healthy living and community service intersected when thirty Providence families celebrated National Family Literacy Month with Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, Toyota Family Learning, and the University of Rhode Island. The families wrote letters and helped organize 22 boxes of non-perishable goods to distribute to refugee families at DIIRI’s annual Thanksgiving dinner. The families also enjoyed a one-hour healthy-cooking demonstration, a mini-exercise class, and story time with a bilingual storyteller. Additionally, a book swap was held and families took home more than 200 books.

Each November – National Family Literacy Month – we lift up and celebrate the tireless efforts of family literacy and family-focused programs, and this year we’re shining a spotlight on 10 of NCFL’s partner organizations as they host family learning events in communities across the U.S.
