East Side House | Camp Wonderopolis
To celebrate National Family Literacy Month, parents, families, teachers, and students gathered together at East Side House Settlement to read What is a Scientist by Barbara Lehn. After discussing the book, 20 families and 74 children broke out into groups and rotated through stations of Camp Wonderopolis activities. Students built a simple rocket and explored the basic principles behind rocketry; experimented with growing a bean in a bag; and tried out fun recipes to make slime and volcanoes.
Parents largely led the work, facilitating the activities and learning. Parents expressed that they enjoyed the opportunity be involved in their children’s learning at school as well as the opportunity to meet new families and experience the sense of giving back. Parents and teachers were provided with instructions (in Spanish and English) and materials to continue the learning at home and in the classroom.
Each November – National Family Literacy Month – we lift up and celebrate the tireless efforts of family literacy and family-focused programs, and this year we’re shining a spotlight on 10 of NCFL’s partner organizations as they host family learning events in communities across the U.S.
