Innovation Grantees win trips to COABE 2017

The National Literacy Directory recently awarded two Innovation Grant scholarships to Directory program representatives to attend Coalition for Adult Basic Education’s (COABE) conference this April 2-5, 2017, in Disney World. COABE is an affiliate partner of the Directory.

The Directory’s Innovation Grant series recognizes and rewards innovative literacy and education programs that are finding solutions to persistent challenges. Grants are announced periodically throughout the year and are available to programs with up-to-date member profiles listed in the National Literacy Directory and to organizations that complete a free Directory profile as part of the grant application process. Add your program for free at www.nationalliteracydirectory.org/register.

Innovation Grantee Roberta Kinard is the director of the Adult Education Program of the School District of Newberry County (S.C.). Kinard knows attending COABE’s conference will afford leadership tools and resources, and is most excited for sessions on the changing needs of students including digital literacy, student engagement, employability skills, and more.

Innovation Grantee Katherine Whalen is the education team lead for Urban Peak in Denver, Colo. At COABE’s conference, Whalen wants to learn how other programs have been successfully implementing WIOA (the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) and take those ideas back to her organization and community. You’ll find Whalen at sessions on volunteer strategies, improving motivation/retention, and Pinellas Hope’s work with the homeless population in Florida.

Congrats to both Whalen & Kinard, and thank you to COABE for teaming up with us to provide this opportunity!
