New program targets attendance, performance (part 1)

Scott County Schools (SCS) has implemented several programs this year at Garth and Southern to improve attendance and performance, according to Assistant Director of Student Services Liz Yandell.

SCS is focusing on attendance because the lack of consistency and the amount of missed material can be difficult for kids, Yandell said. Since parents are doing the best they can, she wants to step up and support their efforts from within the schools.

“If they were just in the setting consistently…it’s all going to improve,” she said. “I feel like when I’m out of school for a week or a day, like I go to a conference or I’m out sick one day, when I come back, I feel overwhelmed. Those kids feel that over and over and over, and they can never catch up.”
