Family Engagement

Strong program implementation requires specific and targeted professional learning. NCFL’s success in model program development since 1989 has long been grounded in the delivery of high-quality and evidence-based professional development that provides practitioners with not only the ‘why’ of family literacy and learning programming but the ‘how’ of program implementation. This ‘how’ includes the practical application of proven strategies delivered with intensity and duration—strategies that indeed work to eradicate poverty in families. The trainings that follow target elements of program implementation that can be used within, and often outside of, NCFL’s signature family literacy and family learning program models.

Inclusive Practices

Understanding the role that language and culture play in relationship building is a key component of developing partnerships among families, community members, and other stakeholders.

To help practitioners develop that understanding, the NCFL offers Linguistic Diversity and Inclusion: Elevating Multilingualism and Relationship BuildingThis workshop provides P-12 practitioners, business professionals, community leaders, and community-based organization staff with the tools to engage in inclusive partnerships with multilingual individuals.

In this six-hour, interactive workshop, participants will reflect on the intersection of language and identity, learn more about the challenges and opportunities faced by multilingual individuals in the United States, and explore impactful strategies for cross-cultural collaboration and inclusion.

The objectives of the workshop include:

a.) Increase awareness of the diverse experiences of language speakers

b.) Provide strategies for building positive relationships and collaborating with individuals from different language backgrounds

c.) Develop empathy and understanding for the challenges and opportunities faced by multilingual learners

This interactive workshop can be offered in person or online.

Family Workshops to Go

Family Workshops to Go is a series of six pre-planned workshops for practitioners to use to provide positive literacy experiences for children ages 3 to 8 and their caregivers in community and school settings. These sessions support children’s literacy development and positive outcomes in the following areas: oral language, concepts of print, reading comprehension, and developmental writing. They provide families with an opportunity to participate in hands-on, intergenerational learning experiences that help transfer learning to school and home.

In the six-hour, interactive training for these workshops, practitioners will receive a facilitator guide that includes a planning guide, agendas, content for six workshops, and reproducible parent handouts. The objectives for the workshop include:

  • Explore the Family Workshops to Go resource.
  • Learn the components of each workshop, including Parent Time, Parent and Child Together (PACT) Time ®, and Child Time.
  • Experience and practice workshop activities.
  • Plan for Workshops to Go implementation.

Foundations in Family Engagement

Effective partnerships between families and practitioners improve student outcomes (Mapp & Bergman, 2019). There is a critical need for practitioner-facing professional learning in order to create opportunities necessary for families to be equal partners in their children’s education. NCFL offers Foundations in Family Engagement—a six-hour, in-person professional learning opportunity for family-facing practitioners including but not limited to early childhood teachers, elementary and secondary educators, school and district administrators, public librarians, and staff at community-based organizations.

In this interactive workshop, participants will build capacity for implementing effective family engagement practices. This session supports practitioners as they explore personal experiences and build a deeper understanding of family engagement. Participants will engage with colleagues, reflect on mindsets, use tools to assess practice, and consider best practices for effectively engaging families.

The session seeks to build knowledge while also setting participants up to apply strategies effectively. Objectives include:

  • Build a common understanding of family engagement.
  • Assess participants’ family engagement practice.
  • Set a goal to improve family engagement practice.
  • Consider opportunities for practices and action steps to achieve goals.
  • Practice using an asset-based mindset.

This workshop is designed to help districts, schools, and community-based organizations that have a desire to deepen partnerships with families in order to improve outcomes for the children and young people they serve.

Stronger Families, Stronger Communities: 20 Years of Highly Effective Teaching Practices Supporting Two-Generation Learning

Early Childhood Education

NCFL believes high-quality professional learning is an essential element for early childhood programs. Our professional learning opportunities support early childhood teachers who work with children ages birth to eight years. Because engaging parents is essential for young children’s oral language and reading development, we also include proven practices for working with parents to support children’s language and literacy skill development.

Our early language and literacy trainings are grounded in evidence-based practices as defined by the What Works Clearinghouse and the National Early Literacy Panel report
