NCFL celebrates paperback release of Byron Pitts’ Step Out on Nothing

A little more than a year ago, NCFL proudly announced the publication of Step Out on Nothing: How Faith and Family Helped Me Conquer Life’s Challenges, the memoir written by NCFL board member Byron Pitts. Having overcome functional illiteracy as a teen, Byron’s story illustrates how the power of family can conquer challenges, especially obstacles to learning and reading.

A year later, Byron has helped elevate the cause of family literacy, sharing his story with communities all across the nation — from New York City to Baltimore to San Antonio to Los Angeles. Family literacy is stronger due to the partnership between Byron and NCFL.

To celebrate this relationship, NCFL is happy to announce that the paperback version of Byron’s memoir is now available. The new version also contains a new chapter that Byron wrote about Haiti.

“I hope the book will keep encouraging people to live their dreams,” Byron said. “What a blessing it has been to meet so many families across the country who are committed to literacy. But there remains a void between desire and access to education and knowledge. NCFL helps fill that gap, but each of us has so much more we can, we should and we must do.”
